COVID-19: Group threatens showdown with Edo govt over lockdown

A group, the Citizens Movement of Nigeria, on Thursday, threatened a showdown with the Edo State Government over the continued partial lockdown of the state which is aimed at curtailing the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus.

The group, which staged a peaceful protest to the premises of the state’s chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) with cards bearing various inscriptions like, ‘Virus Violate Us’, ‘Hunger is Worst, Stop Killing Nigerians, Kill  the virus’, ‘Restrict the hunger Not the People’, said they would be left with no option than to mobilise Edo people should the state government failed to provide palliatives to cushion the effect of sit-at-home order.

Spoke person for the group, Dr. Paul Oyarenma, amongst others things, demanded immediate payment of money into the citizens accounts, saying the restriction of movement by the state government was no longer in the public interest.

Said he, “By the time we wait for a period of time we will come out en-masse, mobilise Edo people, market women, we will all come out to stage our grievances.

“They should give Edo people food and kill the virus. We are saying we are tired of staying at home and if they want us to stay at home they should pay money into our accounts, they have our BVN.”

The group equally condemned alleged plans by the state government to pay workers half salary, adding that available statistics at its disposal, showed that no single individual has received any alert from the Federal Government’s social welfare scheme in the state.
