We’re interested in Nigeria’s elections – UK

The United Kingdom (UK) has come out to say it is strongly interested in the coming general elections in Nigeria.

The European nation hinged its interest on its job to stand with the people of Nigeria in their democratic journey.

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, stated this when she appeared on Nigerian Info FM 95.1, while discussing UK-Nigeria bilateral ties.

The UK, in a post on the High Commission’s Facebook page said, “Earlier today (Tuesday), British High Commissioner, Catriona Laing, was live on Nigerian Info FM 95.1 to discuss UK-Nigeria relations and our work to support free, fair and credible elections.

“As an independent observer country, we respect Nigeria’s sovereignty; it is our job to stand with the people of Nigeria in this democratic journey. The process is what matters to us.

“This is why we will be deploying over 100 observers covering 15 states to support observer missions from European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria, US Embassy and other local observers.”

The UK also expressed confidence in the preparation for the elections, even as it said it had put in so much in strengthening the electoral institutions.

The British High Commissioner added: “We are confident that many things have been put in place since 2015 to strengthen the process. We’ve invested heavily as a partner with INEC Nigeria and Civil Societies to strengthen those institutions and make the process stronger.”
