A tragic boat mishap has claimed the lives of no fewer than six persons when a boat, conveying about 40 passengers capsized in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
Eight other persons were reportedly missing.
In a statement on Thursday, the Benue State Police spokesperson, Catherine Anene, disclosed that twenty-six people have been recovered while a search is ongoing for the remaining eight people.
According to her, a team of police officers were deployed to the scene on getting the report, adding that the combined efforts of the officers and combined police and fishermen led to the rescue of twenty-six survivors, who were taken to hospital for treatment, while six bodies had been recovered.
Anene urged Patton’s of water transportation to observe optimum safety measures especially during this rainy season when the volume of water is very high.
