A total of 100 indigent undergraduates of Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone, studying various disciplines in institutions across the country, on Monday, received N80,000 each as scholarship funds courtesy of the senator representing the zone in the National Assembly, Dr. Sam Egwu.
Speaking during the formal disbursement of cheques of the second tranche of the scheme, held at the Grace Court Hotels and Suites, in Abakaliki, Sen. Egwu, said that beneficiaries of the scheme cuts across the four Local Government Areas of the zone namely Ebonyi, Ohaukwu, Abakaliki and Izzi respectively.
Sen. Egwu restated that the event marked the 2nd tranche of disbursement stating that the scheme would be sustained till the end of the academic programmes of the students.
According to him, “25 students were selected in each of the four local governments of the zone making a total of 100 students, each received N80,000 , this gesture is to assist the parents of the benefiting students curb the hardship faced by the students, education is costly in the country.”
The senator enjoined wealthy individuals in the society to assist indigent students in the society and elevate them educationally stating “economy is getting harder, students are facing terrible situations.”

“I pray that the beneficiaries would through this gesture achieve their noble goals in their various disciplines and graduate in flying colours, the future is bright for them to occupy prominent positions in the society ”
Earlier in his speech, the National Chairman of Izzi Nnodo Youth Forum, who doubles as the Coordinator of the scholarship scheme, Comrade Ben Nwovu, commended Dr. Egwu for his passion for education which necessitated his approval of the scholarship to the indigent students of the zone.
Nwovu’s words, “Senator Egwu’s good works/deeds from his tenure as the first Executive Governor of the State till now as a Senator, have positively influenced all the youths of the senatorial zone and beyond.”
Comrade Nwovu reiterated that the entire people of the zone, comprising parents, students, stakeholders, royal fathers, youths, Leaders of Thought and opinion leaders, were happy with the worthy representation of Dr. Sam Egwu in the National Assembly.
In an interview two of the beneficiaries, Mr. Mbam Chijoke of the Faculty of Medicine University of Benin and Miss Scholarstica Nwankwo of Faculty of Agriculture Ebonyi State University Abakaliki, they both commended the senator for his philanthropic gestures in assisting the students in their academic pursuits.
The duo reiterated that the scholarship funds would ameliorate the hardship confronting the students in their quest to attain education.
The occasion had in attendance representatives of students unions, traditional rulers , Leaders of Thought in the zone, politicians, members of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, among others.
It would be recalled that Sen. Sam Egwu was the first Executive Governor of Ebonyi State from 1999-2007 before being elected twice as the Senator representing Ebonyi North Zone in the Senate from 2015-date.
