Senate confirms Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as substance CJN

The Senate has confirmed Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Justice Ariwoola’s confirmation as CJN followed his answers to senators’ questions, and he was asked to take a bow at 12.45pm.

Recall that on July 26, 2022, the Senate had received a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari requesting the screening and subsequent confirmation of Justice Ariwoola, who is currently acting as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), to be a substantive one.

President Buhari’s letter, dated July 25, 2022, was read aloud during plenary by Senate President Ahmad Lawan.

“Pursuant to Section 231(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I forward for Senate confirmation the appointment of Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“While I hope that the submission will be considered in the usual expeditious manner, please accept my highest consideration, Distinguished Senate President.”

President Buhari appointed Justice Ariwoola as CJN following the resignation of former Chief Justice Muhammad Tanko on June 27, 2022.

Justice Tanko’s resignation came amid a protest by 14 disgruntled Justices over welfare issues.

However, in his resignation letter, the former CJN cited health reasons as the reason for his decision.

Also recall that President Buhari had sworn in Justice Ariwoola as acting CJN last month, following the sudden resignation of Justice Ibrahim Tanko on health grounds.

With his confirmation by the Senate, Justice Ariwoola becomes the third person to hold the country’s top Judiciary position during this administration’s tenure.

Recall that Justice Walter Onnoghen was also the CJN during President Buhari’s administration before resigning.
