Lagos Police speak on death of 8 children in a car

The Lagos State police said it is investigating the death of eight children who died in a car on Sunday.

A statement by the Police on Sunday sent to the Nigerian Xpress said the children mistakenly locked themselves in the car where they all died from possible suffocation,

Their bodies have been deposited at the Badagry General Hospital for autopsy so as to determine the actual cause of death, the statement read.

“Notwithstanding, the commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered a thorough and speedy investigation into the circumstances surrounding their death,” the Police statement said.

Meanwhile, The Nigerian Xpress exclusively reported that seven children were found dead in a vehicle belonging to a woman in the Ja Michael area along Badagry Expressway, behind Area K Police Command in Lagos.

A source told our correspondent that the children, all from the North, were returning from Islamic school on Saturday when they went missing.

Four of the children are siblings from the same while the three belong to another family.

According to the source, a search party found the seven children died in a vehicle belonging to a grandmother known as Saliat Kazeem. who lives alone in the area.

The woman has been detained by the police who said she behaving like a mental patient.

However, the police said they are investigating a case of possible suffocation and not murder.
