Gunmen kill man, abduct wife, son on Enugu road

.... Resident says police lamented lack of fuel to go after killers

Some gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have killed a man and abducted his wife and child in Enugu State, SaharaReporters said.

SaharaReporters gathered that the incident occurred along Afa/Egede Road despite military checkpoints and the ongoing Operation Udoka of the Nigerian Army in the Southeast region.

SaharaReporters reported in February how kidnappers abducted family members conveying the corpse of their late brother from Lagos to Nsukka in Enugu State.

Afa – Egede Road in the Udi Local Government Area of the state has become a dreaded area as kidnappers have made trips terrifying for motorists and commuters along the road.

SaharaReporters gathered that the latest incident happened on Saturday afternoon.

A video of the incident seen by SaharaReporters on Monday shows a middle-aged man, who appears to have been shot and killed, in the front of a Toyota Corolla car.

The vehicle with Lagos Registration number LSD 593 JH was riddled with bullets.

A voice in the video narrating what happened said: “As you have seen, this man was shot dead along the road going from Afa to Egede in Udi local government area of Enugu State. I am warning that people should be vigilant.

“These are the clothes of the wife. The kidnappers marched the survivors to the bush. They riddled their vehicle with bullets. We are calling on the government to come to our aid because there’s nothing we can do.

“As you have seen, we have good government. Nigerian soldiers are busy hunting members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), but they cannot protect the people of Enugu, especially the poor people using Egede – Afa Road.”

A resident of Egede in the local government area who identified herself as Mrs Chinyere confirmed the incident, saying the kidnappers abducted the man’s son and wife.

Although she said that the matter had been reported to the police at the Ezinze Police Division, she added that police and soldiers were doing nothing to rescue the family.

“We got the information about the incident on Saturday afternoon and some neighbourhood vigilantes were immediately deployed to the area.
“Unfortunately, police and soldiers that were contacted are not helping matters. The police are complaining about money to buy fuel for their vehicle,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the incident.

The Command’s spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe, who confirmed the incident, said they had launched a manhunt for the assailants.

“Manhunt of the armed men and rescue of the two reportedly abducted victims are ongoing. Further development will be communicated please,” he said.
