Gov. Sanwo-Olu launches 102 compactor trucks, 100 waste bins to boost refuse collection

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, on Wednesday unveiled 102 brand new compactor trucks, and 100 double Dino bins, for the operation of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

The event took place at the Lagos House, Ikeja, Alausa. The locally designed, and made trucks were presented to the governor by C.

According to the governor, the launching of the trucks and materials were in fulfillment of his “administration’s determination to secure the public and environmental health of the State, as well as to improve the aesthetic value of our environment.”

“In our governing agenda, encapsulated as T.H.E.M.E.S, solid waste management represents a crucial cog of the Health and Environment pillar. Our promise was to “Empower LAWMA to effectively drive the elimination of waste accumulation in Lagos and adoption of recycling state-wide; as well as to harness the potential for job creation and other opportunities in waste recovery, reuse, repair, remanufacturing and materials innovation,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor added over N2 billion have been invested in the rehabilitation of dumpsites across the state, while another N1 billion is currently being invested in the construction of three new transfer loading stations.

The newly-launched equipments includes thirty 12 Cubic Meter Compactor Trucks, sixty 24 Cubic Meter Compactor Trucks, sixty 24 Cubic Meter Compactor Trucks and twelve  Hook Loaders.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the equipment “represents one of the largest singular investments ever in the waste management sector in the state.”

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello said the state currently generates more than 13,000 wastes daily, adding the new trucks “will go a long way in addressing challenges faced by LAWMA in the management of waste in the state.

Managing Director of LAWMA, Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, said the new trucks were designed by LAWMA engineers and produced in Nigeria, while the bins were also manufactured by LAWMA.

Today marks a turn-around in the fortunes of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), because Mr. Governor made a promise and delivered on his promise. Please accept my profound gratitude sir, and that of the management and staff of LAWMA.

The Authority has faced acute shortage of compactor trucks, to do critical intervention assignments. With waste generation on the increase on daily basis, it has been a challenging task till date.

He added the agency had also deployed 15,000 sweepers, to the streets and highways, in addition to a rejuvenated PSP operations, functioning in the 57 local government and council areas of the state.

He further said the trucks would be distributed to all the 57local governments and local council development areas in the state.
