Edo 2020: PDP’ll welcome Obaseki if…, says vice chair

The leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State would be welcomed into the party if he chose to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) and run on the banner of the PDP.

The PDP also promised a level-playing field for aspirants jostling for the governorship ticket come June 20 primary in the state.

The party  zonal vice-chairman, Chief Emmanual Ogidi, said this in Benin-City, the state capital, at a meeting held with the state’s party executive.

The zonal vice-chairman, who predicted victory for the PDP in the forthcoming election, said the party has equally thrown its doors  opened to anybody who intends to defect to the party.

He debunked the rumour presently making the rounds that Governor Godwin Obaseki intends to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the PDP and run on the ticket of the main opposition party following his disagreement with the party national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.  

According to him, “If Governor Obaseki comes, we will take him. We can’t drive anybody from entering. Our doors are wide opened.

“I am not however aware that he has started negotiations with us with a view to defecting. If the governor has seen the light and wants to come to the PDP, he is welcome.

“We have a procedure. There is going to be primary. The PDP does not award. If you win the primary, you become the candidate.

“We have started selling forms. The sale of forms ends on Friday. After that we screen. After then, we go for primary and whoever wins is the candidate.”

On his part, the state’s party chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi who dismissed alleged adoption of an anointed candidate by the party leadership, said PDP would sweep the forth-comimg governorship election in the state.
