Buhari orders payment of ASUU members’ February, March salaries

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved that members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) be immediately paid their withheld February and March salaries whether they had enrolled for the contentious Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information (IPPIS) platform or not.

The university lecturers had last month declared indefinite industrial action following the government introduction of the IPPIS payment system, which they rejected. Consequently, government withheld salaries of those that defied its order to register for the new payment arrangement.

However, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, on Tuesday said: “President Muhammadu Buhari has today (Tuesday) approved the immediate payment of the withheld salaries of February and March 2020 of the university lecturers, who have not registered on the IPPIS platform.

“He has also directed the Ministry of Finance, Budget and Planning, and the Accountant-General of the Federation to effect the payments.”

Meanwhile, ASUU has welcomed the predident’s directive, saying it would result in meaningful dialogue.
