Anambra CP assures investigation into Onitsha petrol tanker fire incident

Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, John B. Abang, has assured residents of Onitsha of strict investigation to unravel the primary cause of the fire incident that claimed many lives, on Wednesday.

The fire incident reportedly started at about 12:59p.m, when a trailer, loaded with petroleum product, reportedly lost  control at Upper Iweka area along Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, Onitsha, and crashed into a pavement in between the expressway.

According to a press release by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed, he said the police boss, who was at the scene of the incident for on-the-spot assessment, promised to investigate the major cause of the incident.

The statement read in part: “The Commissioner of Police, CP John B.Abang visited the scene for on the spot assessment and appealed  to the residents to remain calm. Fire Service department was equally contacted.

Meanwhile, a yet-to-be identified woman and her baby, caught up in the inferno and burnt beyond recognition, were rushed to Toronto  Hospital but were certified dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment.

“Consequently, Police patrol teams have cordoned off the area to prevent hoodlums from taking advantage to loot while effort is still ongoing to put off the fire .Case under investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident please”.
