10th Africa Arm Wrestling Championships: 9 wrestlers representing Nigeria in Mali

Nine athletes are representing the country at the 10th edition of the Africa Arm Wrestling Championships which commenced on Friday in Bamako, Mali.

Jackson Olatunji, the President of the Nigeria Arm Wrestling Federation (NAWF), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone from Bamako.

Olatunji said the athletes, made up of seven male and two female, will compete in nine categories at the event.

“Yesterday (Thursday) was the arrival day for the competition and activities will starts today with weighing in of athletes and all our nine representatives are in top form for this event.

“They have all prepared adequately for the championships and they are hopeful of winning medals for the country,” he said.

The president said that 12 countries comprising of Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Senegal, Niger, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, Togo, Guinea and host Mali are taking part in the championships.

NAN reports that Ghana hosted and won the 9th edition of the competition with 32 gold, 32 silver and 25 bronze medals.

Team Nigeria finished second on the medals table with six gold, six silver and two bronze medals.

NAN also reports that Nigeria hosted and won the 8th edition held in 2017 in Lagos with 19 gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze medals.

The championships will end on Saturday. (NAN)
