(UPDATED) NIJ: Osoba replaces Isa Funtua

Three decades after quitting as chairman, Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), former governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba has been reappointed to the position.
Osoba’s reappointment was announced after the meeting of the Governing Council on Tuesday, the first since the passage of the former chairman, Alhaji Ismaila Isa Funtua.
A press statement signed by the Acting Registrar of the NIJ, Mrs Patricia Kalesanwo said Osoba who presided over the meeting was introduced as the new council chairman by veteran journalist and Publisher of Vanguard Newspapers, Mr Sam Amuka. The nomination was unanimously adopted.
According to the statement, the assumption of Aremo Osoba ”is to explore his wealth of knowledge, administrative skill, professional depth and goodwill to reposition the institute in this era of technology-driven communication industry.”

A former president of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Mr Ray Ekpu was appointed as the deputy chairman of the council.
It was also decided that the chairman of the NIJ Alumni Association be incorporated into the council in ex-officio capacity with no voting right to enable the old students to contribute to the repositioning of their alma mater.
The Council thanked the Provost of the Institute, Mr Gbemiga Ogunleye for his services and wished him the best in his future endeavours as his tenure expires at the end of August 2020.
The Council directed its establishment committee to set in motion the process of appointment of a new provost.
The Council commended the efforts of the leaders of the profession, including the NPAN President, Mr Nduka Obaigbena, Mr Amuka and the late Ismaila Isa in steering the ship of the institute till the moment.
A minute of silence was observed in remembrance of Alhaji Isa while the school management was directed to organise a day of tribute in his honour.
