UPDATE: NAF confirms air crash involving Chief of Army Staff, Attahiru

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Ibrahim Attahiru died in an air crash on Friday evening.
Gen Attahiru died aboard an Air Force aircraft alongside seven other military officers near the Kaduna International Airport, while on an official trip to Kaduna.  
The aircraft was said to have crash-landed while approaching the airport runway.
A statement issued by the Nigerian Air Force confirmed the plane crash (not officers on board).
NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, said the crash occurred near the Kaduna International Airport.
“An air crash involving a @NigAirForce aircraft occurred this evening near the Kaduna International Airport. The immediate cause of the crash is still being ascertained. More details to follow soon.”
The crash was said to have occurred about 6 pm during heavy rainfall.
Identities of officers on board have yet to be released by the military authorities.
Gen Attahiru had spent barely four months in office as the Army chief having been appointed on January 26, succeeding Tukur Buratai. He was aged 54.
