Organisation awards scholarship to 100 girls in Plateau displaced communities

An organisation, Girls Education Mission International (GEMI), has awarded scholarship to 100 girls from Internally Displaced Communities (IDCs) in Bassa, Riyom and Barkin Ladi local government areas of Plateau State, Mrs Kerurah Shammah, its Executive Director, has said.

Shammah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Jos that the gesture was to ensure the successful completion of senior and junior education of the vulnerable children.

” We have a project called ‘Girls Education Now Or Never” funded by TY Danjuma Foundation. The project has a total of 100 SS3 and JSS3 students from 25 schools as beneficiaries,”she said.

She said the selected girls were paid their senior secondary certificate fees and the Basic Education Certificate Examinations(BECE) fees of the National Examinations Council (NECO).

She said a mentoring programme was organised for the beneficiaries on topics on examination malpractice, how to pass examinations, effective life skill as well as HIV/AIDS prevention.

The executive director said to realise the Vision of TY Danjuma Foundation in providing access to quality education for the girl-child, the group was working toward sustainable initiatives to ensure that more vulnerable children were enrolled in the scheme.

She said the cooperation and support of the communities and the government was very critical to attract more support to the state from the Foundation.(NAN)
