Joe Ajaero: Organised Labour goes on strike next week

The organised labour made known its intention to embark on a nationwide strike over the beating and abduction of the President, the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero from Wednesday, November 8, 2023.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, the NLC and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, gave the Federal Government a six-point demand to avert the industrial action.
The demands included the immediate removal of the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Barde, and the Area Commander, among other officials, for allegedly being complicit in the brutalisation and humiliation of the NLC President and some workers.

Recall that Ajaero was on Wednesday allegedly battered and arrested by the police in Owerri during the protest by the Imo State workers over non-payment of workers’ salaries by the state government.
However, the police denied the allegation, claiming that they took Ajaero into protective custody though the NLC insisted that Governor Uzodimma conspired with the state’s Commissioner of Police, to ‘abduct’ their leader and brutalised him.

In a statement titled, “The President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero has been abducted by Hope Uzodimma and the Imo State Police Commissioner’’, signed by the joint Unions’ Secretaries, Emmanuel Ugboaja, NLC, and Nuhu Toro, TUC, they condemned the arrest and detention of Ajaero and urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene.

Ajaero has since been released and attending to his health, which reportedly worsened due to his ordeal.
