An ex-convict, Peter Abah, has been arrested by men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos State Police Command, for stealing electric cables from a transformer on Mobolaji Johnson Road, Ikeja.
The 32-year-old Abah, it was learnt, had just regained freedon from prison custody in December 2018. He was convicted for stealing a solar panel which landed him in Badagry prison.
The suspect who was arrested with the cables last Thursday, had concealed the stolen item in a wheelbarrow.
Making confession statement, Abah told the police that he along with two others, now at large, stole the cable from a newly installed transformer in the area.
“We were three. We cut the cable from a transformer. We climbed the electric pole before removing the cables from It.
“I was just unlucky. My colleagues’ names are Godwin and Zuma. We all connived to cut the upright cables, and we knew we could make something out of it to augment what we were making at our menial job,” Abah said.
In a related development, an armed robbery suspect, operating with ‘okada’ in Ikorodu area of Lagos, was arrested in the early hours of Thursday, by the officials of the RRS.
The robbery suspect, Sodiq Rasaq was arrested at Ijede Junction, Ikorodu when he was fleeing the scene of robbery.
It was gathered that the suspect in company of an accomplice, Quadri Yusuph, had robbed a ‘puff – puff’ seller, dispossessing him of N20,000.
The duo thereafter stabbed their victim with a dagger twice in the hand when he challenged them.
The suspects, having completed their mission fled the scene before their victim raised alarm.
According to the victim, Ogbodo Chibuike, “ Two young men on ‘okada’, stopped me that they wanted to buy ‘puff – puff’ around 5:00 a.m, because they were of my age, I didn’t suspect anything. They bought N200 worth of ‘puff-puff’
“ They refused to pay, I challenged them, they then alighted from the ‘Okada’ and stabbed me. They also took my wallet containing N20,000:00.
“ I had to call for help when they stabbed me. It was my noise that attracted people. Because they were on ‘okada’, those who came to my aid couldn’t chase them but some RRS officers on patrol chased them.
“ They caught up with them at Ijede Junction and arrested one of them. The other escaped.”
Speaking on the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Muazu Zubairu has directed that all the fleeing suspects be arrested and the case transferred to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba for further investigation.
