EFCC arraign man for allegedly N1.5m theft

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) on wednesday arraigned one Gbenga Kolade before an Ikeja Special Offences Court for allegedly stealing N1.5 million, belonging Abayomi Joseph.
It was gathered that the defendant allegedly used the victim’s name and other information belonging to the victim to raise an overdraft of N1, 540, 000.00, which he converted to his own personal use.Consequently, the EFCC has charged Kolade with a  five- count charge, bordering on  forgery, use of false documents and stealing before justice Mojisola Dada.
He pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him.
One of the charges read: “That you Gbenga Kolade sometime in October 2018, at Lagos within the Ikeja Judicial Division, dishonestly converted for your use the sum of one million, five hundred and forty thousand naira (N1, 540, 000.00) property of Abayomi Joseph.”

Another charge read: “That you Gbenga Kolade sometime in October 2018 at Lagos within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud and in order to facilitate your obtaining an overdraft facility for Abayomi Joseph by false pretence from Ren Money Plc. forged a Wema Bank Account Statement of account, with account number 0221512928 purported to belong to Michael Abayomi Joseph.”
However, in view of the plea, the prosecution counsel, C. O. Edozie, requested for a trial date and prayed the court to remand the defendant in correctional centre, pending the outcome of the case.
In response to that, the defence counsel, Larry Williams, informed the court that application for bail had not been filed due to the fact that he got the brief late. Nevertheless, he pleaded with the court for a short date to file and serve the application for bail on the prosecution.
Justice Dada, having listened to both parties, adjourned the case till January 13, 2020 for hearing of bail application and to February 17, 2020 for commencement of trial.
She also ordered that the defendant be remanded in the correctional custody.
