New Imo State Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro, was yesterday given a bloody welcome as operatives of Joint security repelled an attack on Orlu Divisional Police Headquarters, killing eight of the attackers.
The security operatives also recovered seven vehicles used by the unknown invaders for the attack.
The gun duel between the gunmen and the security operatives, which created fear among residents, reportedly lasted several hours, as reinforcement had to be sent from nearby 34 artillery brigade in Obinze.
Though the Police Spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, could not be reached, a senior police officer confirmed the incident, adding that corpses of the slain attackers and their vehicles were brought to the state police command headquarters in Owerri.
He noted, however, that the attack was foiled because the police divisional headquarters was not burnt and no policeman was killed.
