For Bayelsa State governor, Sen. Douye Diri, it would be another weekend of accolades as the Sportsville award holds Saturday in Lagos State.

Governor Diri whose state has emerged as the new powerhouse of Nigerian sports would be bestowed with the Governor of the Year award just seven days after he shined in the same city where he bagged The Sun Newspapers Award.

Diri while basking in the euphoria of the deserved awards said it would definitely spur him to do more for Bayelsa.

At the Sun Awards, Diri dedicated the honor done him to the victims of Bayelsa flood. Recall that the state was unfortunately the most impacted state during the flood that ravaged the country last year.

On the Sportsville award, the sports loving governor said it would make him do more for sports declaring that his focus moving forward would be to upgrade sports infrastructure in the state.

Hear Diri, Sports has been well managed in the state because we have the right men in charge. I have a sports commissioner, Daniel Igali who is a guru when it comes to sports. I also have a deputy governor who like me is passionate about sports. My deputy is directly overseeing sports and he has done that very well. Even the state assembly has been quite supportive. We have a Speaker who is also a great sports lover. That is the secret of Bayelsa’s success story.

“One area we have to focus on in the weeks and months ahead is in the area of sports infrastructure. We are going to construct a new world class stadium in Bayelsa and when we have the facilities in place we would bid for the National Sports festival and as hosts who says we can’t win it. We will be hosting to win. If by His Grace, the good people of Bayelsa return us for the second term, then we can begin to actualize this dream. I happy to the glory of God we have done well in sports since I became governor.”

Diri alongside 13 other eminent Nigerians would be honored by Sportsville at an event billed for Saturday at the Lagos Country Club.

The annual Sportsville award is in its third edition.

Sports minister Sunday Dare would serve as Chairman of the day with Edo state deputy governor, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu as Special Guest of Honor.
