Anthony Iwuoma

Justice Ntong Ntong of the Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo, on Friday, sentenced a 31-year-old man, Ubon Udo Edet, to death by hanging for killing his girlfriend, Emem Effiok James, 22, over suspicion of infidelity.

Edet was found guilty of murder after the case was proven beyond every reasonable doubt.

The convict, an aluminum fabricator, lived with his now late girlfriend, at 2, Joshua Uwa Street, Ekit Itam in Itu, for about two years until they had a problem in their relationship in December 2018.

It was gathered that Ubon started suspecting his fiancee of starting an amorous afffair with his neighbour, one Nsisong.

Blinded by jealousy, Ubon confessed to have decapitated the victim with his aluminum drilling machine while she was asleep in their one-room apartment.

After the act, Ubon escaped through the ceiling, leaving her in a pool of blood only to report to the police that armed robbers attacked his fiancee.

However, the judge found him guilty as charged and convicted him accordingly.

“Death is a mandatory sentence for capital offenses. I do not have any discretion in this matter. In accordance with my oath of judicial office, Ubon Udo Edet, the sentence of this Honorable Court is that you be hanged by the neck until you are dead,” he ruled.

The judge commended the police involved with the case for their professionalism.

He said, “How I wished all the police officers in Akwa Ibom in particular and Nigeria in general, will always emulate these officers: Inspector Emmanuel Udobong and Inspector Peter Robert to always conduct a discreet and thorough investigation of any matter assigned to them.

“Our society needs this kind of gentlemen par excellence. Police investigation assists the court to do substantial justice and in this case, I am satisfied with the report of the investigation made by the police in this case,” the judge said while delivering the judgment.”

Domestic violence has been on the rise in the country and there have been reports of spousal abuse some of which had led to death.
