Yellow Fever: WHO/Ebonyi Govt to conduct Mass Reactive Vaccination Campaign to contain outbreak

Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health Dr Daniel Umezurike, has stated that the government was working with United Nations Agencies and International Coordinating Groups (ICG) to conduct Mass Reactive Vaccination Campaign within the target age of 9 months -44 years, to contain the outbreak of yellow fever outbreak.

In a similar vein, the government has officially confirmed the death of two persons across the state from the yellow fever virus.

Briefing newsmen on Monday on the update of the epidemics and measures so far taken by the government to cushion the menace,, Dr Umezurike said that since the outbreak the villagers had innocently attributed every deaths within the period to yellow fever.

According to him, “sequel to the reports received by the government on 15th July 2019, the state Rapid Response Team was deployed to Izzi local Government Area scene of the outbreak for thorough investigation ”

“Our findings revealed that Mr O J , a 37 year old farmer who hails from Nkumoro community was on admission at Ndingele with symptoms of fever and yellowness of eyes”

“Four Samples were collected and sent to Public Health Laboratory, because there was no Reagent the samples were sent to National Reference Laboratory Abuja , three of them tested positive for yellow fever virus on 22 July 2019”

“Since the outbreaks of yellow fever , a total of 9 positive cases with two deaths among positive cases were recorded”

“The State Government and all the stakeholders on Health will continue to work with Nigeria Center for Disease Control ( NCDC), World Health Organisation (WHO), National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to ensure that the outbreak was contained in the state.

The Commissioner disclosed that six patients were currently on admission in various hospitals in the state namely General hospital Iboko and Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching hospital Abakaliki.

He said that at present International Coordinating Groups process has been completed for possible Mass Vaccination for all residents of the state.

The Commissioner maintained that Public Awareness Campaign on how to prevent the disease through Mass immunization and Jingles ,use of mosquito Nets and clean environment were being carried out across the state.

It would be recalled that the Ebonyi State had on 15th July 2019 recorded an outbreak of yellow fever epidemics in Ndingele Izzi local Government Area of the state and since then deployed it’s Rapid Response Team to the affected communities resulting to massive containment of the virus.
