Xenophobia reprisal attacks: Be responsible to host communities, Sanwo-Olu charges business owners

Ayodele Olalere
Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said to forestall future occurrence of reprisal xenophobia attacks by Nigerians, business owners operating in the country should show more responsibilities to their host communities.
The governor on Saturday, during on-the-spot assessment of damages to Ajah-Sangotedo, and Surulere Shopping malls, where ShopRite is located and where goods were damaged during reprisal xenophobia attacks by some Nigerians, condemned destruction of stores and goods at the malls,  but urged business owners to be more friendly and show more responsibilities to their host communities.
” We condemned in strong terms whatever must have led to this . The enormous destruction of people’s property. Unfortunately, those affected are all indigenous stores. About 5000 workers have been out of job from the two malls since the incident happened. This is unimaginable, ” he said.
He added: ” The lesson from all these is to go back to see how we can learn from it and social implications. Business owners need to be more interactive in community where they do business. Business owners need to do something for their communities so people can remember a brand that has supported them.
More importantly, we want to assure the business community that ease of doing business and security of property is paramount to us. We will discuss with hierarchy of the police in what they will do to those arrested. This is clear robbery. Let’s be stronger so this does not happen again in our community.”
