Woman subjects five-year-old, three others, to weeks of dry fasting

A middle-aged woman, who had subjected herself, and her four kids, including a five-year-old girl, to one-month compulsory dry fasting and prayers, have been arrested by the police in Lagos.

The woman, Caroline Emezie, an indigene of Anambra state, claimed the self-imposed fasting was based on God’s instruction to her.
It was learned that sister Caro, as she is fondly called, had been having accommodation challenge before a good Samaritan offered her a shop in the Shasha area of Lagos, where she lived with her children.
She had told the owner of the shop, who gave her only two weeks to sort her accommodation issues, that God had instructed her to start a ministry in the shop while using her children as first concerts to fast for the success of the ministry.
The children who had emaciated from the fast were rescued and taken to the Shasha police division.
The shop owner, a woman (name withheld), on noticing Caroline had refused to move out of the shop, coupled with the fact that several efforts to get her to feed the children, who were gradually dying of hunger fell on deaf ears, the woman had mobilized youths to send Caroline and her children parking.
It was, however, while they were roaming the streets that a police patrol vehicle found them and rescued the children.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Elkana Bala, confirmed the development saying Caroline had maintained her action was in line with God’s directive.
Bala said the woman and the children looked malnourished, as they had subjected themselves to weeks of hunger and starvation.
He confirmed that the woman and her children will soon be transferred to the ministry of social welfare.
