Iyanuoluwa Omonigbo, the 24-year-old university graduate of Biochemistry, who gave her mother a salute after returning from the National Youth Service, has narrated why she saluted her mother when she returned from the NYSC Camp.

In an interview with BBC Pidgin, Iyanuoluwa said the salute she gave her mother was the type given to dignitaries who visit them at the NYSC Camp.

“The salute video I did for my mother was to honour her because she single-handedly sent me to school.

“When we were in the camp where they taught us the salute, I saw that it is meant for people of honour, dignitaries who come that we give that kind of salute. I decided that anytime I get home, I will give her this salute because she deserves the honour for all she had done for us,” she said.

Her mother, Olubunmi Adeola Alade, who is divorced from her father, said that growing up, she had a beautiful picture of marriage in her mind. But when things did not turn out between her and her husband, she decided to raise her children not feel the absence of their father.

According to the woman, she went back to her parents’ house when her marriage with her husband failed. She said she decided to take things in her stride and raise the children alone.

Ms Alade said she hawked chicken in Victoria Island area of Lagos to be able to afford to send the children to school.

Iyanuoluwa said the viral video has opened doors of opportunities for them including job offers and monetary donations.

Former Education Minister, Oby Ezekwesili, she said, had asked her if she would be interested in doing her Master’s Degree program online.

The video which was posted on Facebook early this month attracted a lot of positive reactions.
