Unknown gunmen have killed two policemen and one other person at Amukabia, Achalla, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The Killers also set the corpses of their victims ablaze.

In a statement, spokesman of the state police command,Tochukwu Ikenga, identified the slain cops as members of a six- man police team who had gone to recover a vehicle the gunmen had on July 9 snatched at gun point  in Oye-Agu Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.

He added that the officers, who were accompanied by an expert in car-tracking, were ambushed by the gunmen who captured the two officers and the car tracker.

Ikenga also disclosed that the police operatives later killed some of the gunmen and destroyed three of their camps during a counter-operation.

However, he said: “Unfortunately, some of the hoodlums escaped with bullet wounds, having already murdered their captives and set their bodies ablaze,” adding that the remains of the victims have been recovered and deposited in a mortuary.

Some items recovered from the gunmen, the police said, included one human skull, a locally made rocket propelled grande RPG launcher, two (RPG) bombs, one single-barrel long gun, empty chain of bullet, two cylinders, a huge quantity of hard drugs, a police beret and a police belt, one Toyota Sienna and one Mercedes Benz SUV.

Meanwhile, as efforts are on to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects, the state Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng, has commisserated with the families of the slain police operatives and the civilian.

According to the police mouthpiece, the CP described the incident as a “classic example of the risk and sacrifices” associated with police job in securing the lives and property of Nigerians.

Echeng, however,  vowed to arrest the hoodlums and their accomplices and bring them to book while assuring  residents that the police had intensified efforts to dislodge the hoodlums from areas they occupy in the state.

Unknown gunmen have made life intolerable for people in the South East, as people no longer feel safe in the entire region, particularly Anambra and Imo states.

Although the government and security agencies finger the  Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, for the carnage, for the deadly reign of terror, the pro-Biafra agitators have washed their hands off the carnage.
