Union task workers on dedication to duty, service to humanity

The Lagos State Council of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, has urged workers in the state to remain dedicated to protecting their jobs.

Its Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Ekundayo, made the call at the end of a two-day annual workshop organised for workers on Friday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the workshop was entitled: “21st Century Labour Leadership: Growth, Opportunities, and Challenges’’.

Ekundayo also urged labour leaders to be accountable to members of the union to be forthright, honest, open, and dedicated to service for humanity.

“Workers need to work hard, and remain dedicated to their jobs.

“Also, they need to be mindful of creating and maintaining a decent work environment for themselves.

“It is the duty we owe ourselves and also to leave a better work place for those that will come after us,’’ he said.

The chairman also urged workers to develop and get themselves prepared for eventualities of technological advancement, as it was currently the global trend.

According to him, technological advancement has both challenges and opportunities there in.

“On the challenges, it will impact the future of jobs; some jobs will go into extinct, as robotic applications, for instance, will take over some jobs.

“It is just for us to know what is going to happen, the possibilities in the near future, get ourselves prepared to take the advantage here in and not be caught reacting when eventualities happen,’’ Ekundayo said.

An Executive Consultant, Mr. Segun Mojeed, urged workers to be enforcers of industrial safety and make sure they obey laws at their work places.

“We have massive industrial safety regulations.

“Let us carry it to our private lives; when we drive, let us use our seat belt, drive at the recommended speed limits, and so on these are safety issues we must consider,’’ Mojeed said.

Also, TUC Vice-Chairman, Mr. Emmanual Idogen, said that the workshop was necessary to keep workers abreast of the present happenings in the labour arena.

Idogen said: “If we look at what is happening in labour and government, what we have is power relations.

“So, we need to train our members on how to face and discuss effectively with the management of organisations and the government on issues affecting them.’’ (NAN)
