Union Bank closes branch as customer tests positive to Coronavirus

Union Bank of Nigeria PLC has shut its Ikota, Lagos State, branch after a customer who was there for services three weeks ago was confirmed positive for Coronavirus.

The bank said it also took the decision after it found out that one of its staff attended the African Magic Viewers Choice Awards on March 14, 2020, where one of the guests has been confirmed to be positive for the virus.

The lead agency in the fight against COVID-19 in the country, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), has since asked all those who attended the AMVCA to self-isolate and call for testing if they showed symptoms.

In a statement, the Bank said on Tuesday: “It has come to our attention that a staff at our Ikota, Lagos branch was in contact with a now confirmed Covid-19 case three weeks ago.

“The Bank was also alerted today that an employee at the same branch attended the AMVCA awards show on March 14, 2020.

“Consequently, the Ikota branch has been shut down and will undergo a deep hygiene clean-up.”

The Bank said though none of its staff, including the one who attended the ANVCA, had shown any symptoms of COVID-19, it has advised all staff of the branch to self-isolate with immediate effect.

It said all necessary medical protocols have been activated in respect of the development, adding: “The branch will reopen with a new set of relief employees while the current employees isolate.

“The public will be notified once the branch reopens.

“Our priority at this time is for the health and safety of our employees, customers and community and Union Bank will continue to do its part to contain the spread of the Covid-19 virus.”
