An undergraduate student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) is being held by men of the anti-kidnapping unit of the state Police Command for her involvment in the kidnap of a two-year-old girl.

The 21-year-old student, identified as Madueke Jennifer, was allegdly arrested in place of her mother.

It was gathered that her mother is suspected to be a member of the three-man gang that had abducted the child on March 24, 2019, at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church, Regional Headquaters, Agege.

Investigations revealed that Mrs. Madueke, who is now on the run, had brought the two-year-old Ojo Esther to her Igando residence, claiming to have adopted her from an orphanage home. While the gang was requesting for ransom from both the parent of the child and the church, Mrs. Madueke was reportedly nursing the child.

According  to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Elkana Bala, the suspects kept changing the point of collection of the ransom around Igando area.

Luck, however, ran out on them when intelligence on their hideout reached the Igando Police Division on May 6. Two suspects, Nwaigbo Magnus and Sixtus Osunwoke, were arrested in the process. They, however, led the  police to where they kept the child.

Bala said, “ Acting on a credible intelligence, the Divisional Police Officer, Igando Police Station, CSP Taiwo Kasumu led his plain cloth surveillance men on the trail of the suspected kidnappers.

“The kidnappers had rwquested for ransom and continued to change the venue for the collection of ransom within Igando axis for over four hours until they were rounded up by the police.

“The DPO followed up on available information and the baby has been recovered from a hidden den and reunited with the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jame Oladipo Ojo.

“Jennifer was said to be with the child when the police stormed her family house to rescue the child, and also arrest her mother.

“She was arrested, since the police detectives could not find her mother, and transfered to the anti-kidnapping unit.”

Asked why the university undergraduate had not been released since she was not directly involved in the crime, Bala said, “The lady was actually arrested in custody of the two-year-old child that was kidnapped at Mountain of Fire Church Agege. She was not arrested in place of her mother.

“ Ramsom was demanded and two suspects were arrested at the point of receiving the ransom.

“They led operatives to where they kept the baby and the lady in question was found with the child. Investigation is ongoing please.”
