Trouble brews in Lagos as civil servants tackle IRS

The Lagos Chapter of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria is poised for war with the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), following alleged refusal of the management of the agency to reach an agreement with the union on the implementation of the adjustment of its staff salary based on the minimum wage increment.

In a statement dated January 10, 2023 signed by the Secretary of the union, Comrade Abiodun Aladetan, it carpeted the management of LIRS for its refusal to implement the adjusted minimum wage which was signed into law by the state government since 2019 and had been implemented by the state in other ministries and agencies.

The statement stated that contrary to claims by the Executive Chairman of LIRS, Mr. Ayodele Subair in a correspondence dated January 9, 2023 that it had reached agreement with the union on the lingering issue, the fact of the matter is that no agreement has been reached between both parties.

It added that though talks have reached an advanced stage between the committee set up by the union and the management of LIRS, ‘no agreement has been signed’ between parties.

“We want to state clearly that negotiation has reached an advanced stage and what is left is for both parties to agree on certain grey areas which will be followed by the signing of agreement by all parties.

As at Monday January 9, 2023, no agreement has been signed and no meeting was held last week as claimed by the management in respect of the matter,” the statement clarified.

The union accused the LIRS management of attempting to ‘rubbish the efforts of all committee members when they know they have something up their sleeves.’, adding that the claim by the leadership of the agency that it is set to commence implementation of the adjustment subject to governor’s approval was false.

It described the LIRS management action as misleading and capable of destroying all the gains by Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration and bringing the union in conflict with the state government.

It, therefore, urged the management of the agency to ‘go back to the round table and sign the agreement before it’s too late.’
