A 22-year-old tricyclist, Yusuf Quadri, has been arrested by policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), of the Lagos State Police Command, for impersonating a soldier.
Quadri was arrested during a cautious stop and search along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way near Muritala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja.
The suspect was said to be riding on a commercial tricycle along Airport Road, which had been restricted by the Lagos State Government, when he was stopped.
According to Police source, when Quadri was stopped by the police, he told the officers he was a military personnel. A little probe by the officers however,  revealed he was impersonating.
During interrogation, Quadri who is from Ogun State said, “ I a primary school certificate holder. I stole one of the military uniforms of a newly promoted officer, who I was assisting to get his luggage ready.
“ I thereafter used the uniform to take a photograph, which I subsequently converted to an identity card. I made use of the military photograph and outfit to by-pass security operatives, Local Government and LASTMA officials that might attempt to arrest me whenever I was on the wrong side of the law.”
The Police have however recovered the stolen military uniform from the suspect’s home.
Similarly, the operatives of RRS also arrested a robbery suspect, Emeka Ohiaeri at the Oshodi area of Lagos.
The suspect who was caught while robbing commuters at about 8pm last Wednesday, had also pulled off a mobile phone from the hands of a youth corps member in traffic.
Unknown to Ohiaeri, RRS operative spotted him and trailed him to where he was standing with his colleagues, before arresting him. The phone was recovered from him and handed over to its owner at the RRS Headquarter, Ikeja, the following day.
The suspect confessed to the police that since arriving Oshodi few years ago, he had been surviving through stolen phones, purses and handbags.
He added that he had lost count of the numbers of phones he had collected in traffic. He emphasized that he had a regular buyer for such phones.
Meanwhile Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Muazu Zubairu, who was briefed on the matter, has directed that the two suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, adding that RRS reinforce its presence in Oshodi to curb traffic robbery.
