Technological advancements: Convert Nigerian Varsities to Polytechnic – Alumni urge FG

The Federal government has been urged to convert some universities in the country to Polytechnics for Nigeria to peer among nations with technological development, giving this condition as a sure way for her to carve a niche for herself in terms of development in technology.  

The call was made in a communique, made available to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti at the weekend and signed by Nwabuoku Ifeanyi Peter, Chairman,  Communique Drafting Community, Abdulraman Ayuba, member and Babalola Gbenga, member, at the quarterly meeting of the Forum of Nigerian Polytechnics Alumni Associations ( FONPAA), held at the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

FONPAA advised that for the nation to rise to an enviable height in its quest for development in technology, the federal government should take a cue from China’s technological development policy where many of her universities were converted to polytechnics and replicate same in the country, the communique reads in part : “FONPAA recalls the present development in the Peoples Republic of China, where many Universities were converted to Polytechnics to align them with the policy trust of the government to technological innovations, advancement and development to contemporary world trends.

FONPAA invites the federal government of Nigeria to take a cue from China and replicate same for our country.”

The Association reaffirmed its commitment to further boost technological education in Nigeria and assured on its delivery on the recently signed Federal Polytechnic Act, which allows Polytechnics to run degree programmes for the award of Bachelor of Technology ( B.Tech).

“FONPAA, in reaffirming the importance of technological education in Nigeria, resolved to set up a Committee that will recommend ways of strengthening the recently signed Federal Polytechnic Act, to allow Polytechnics in Nigeria to run degree programmes for the award of B. Tech.” 

Present at the Forum were various  Alumni Associations from Polytechnics across the country.
