Tanker drivers call off strike as Lagos govt, NUPENG reaches agreement

Following an agreement reached with Lagos State.government, National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas, NUPENG, has called off its strike which began on Monday.

In a communique issued at the end of a meeting and signed by the state Commissioner of Energy and Mineral Resources, Olalere Odusote and Solomon Kilanko, Deputy National President, NUPENG, the state government and the union agreed to address issues raised by the Union.

Some of the agreements are to.meet with all heads of security agencies to secure their commitment to ensure free passage of all petroleum product vehicles given their importance to the economy.

“The menace of area boys would be handled by relevant government agencies and a dedicated phone number will be established with the next week to ensure that petroleum product transporters have prompt access to security agencies,”the communique stated.

The state government also promised to ” investigate the issue of extraordinary levies by a particular local government and the local government will.immediately be advised to collect only levies that are legally due.”

In the area of bad roads, the government promised to continue to relate with all road users in the planning and execution of road works in the state.

The union also promised its commitment to “ensuring all tankers are loaded within the capacity provided for in the regulation and provided by DPR.”

The government also promised to review the timing of restrictions of movement of petroleum tankers and advise a resolution to ease their movement to tank farms.
