Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State has  said he would declare his intention to contest the 2023 presidential election between January and February 2022 irrespective of the stand of his fellow governors in the South.

The governor, who spoke at a media briefing, in Sokoto, said he was not bothered by the decision of the southern governors on zoning, saying they are entitled to their own opinion.

He added that the proposed direct primaries would be affected by logistics and other related challenges.

The governor said he participated in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s primaries in Port Harcourt in 2018, and would soon commence consultations with relevant stakeholders while also intensifying prayers in that regard.

According to Tambuwal: “You know that in 2018, I participated in the PDP primaries held in Port Harcourt and I thank God, I came second and several people are talking to me to give it a trial. At this moment, all I can tell you is that I am going to commence my consultations and whatever feedback I get with the prayers that I have been doing, then I will make my position known very soon.”

Blueprint reported that when asked whether his intentions would be communicated to Nigerians by January or February, the governor said “somewhere along the line.”

On whether his ambition would not offend some of his southern friends based on the recent position of the Southern governors  that the presidency should go to the South come 2023, Tambuwal said they were entitled to their opinion.

Tambuwal is a former speaker of the House of Representatives and currently serving his second term as Governor of Sokoto State. Though the PDP has not made a categorical statement on where it would zone its presidential in the 2023 general elections, the governor may be courting the wrath of his party if he insists on running regardless of what the party decides.
