Suicide: Dean tasks UNILORIN Centre on youth rehabilitation

The Dean of Postgraduate School, University of Ilorin, Prof. Raji Bello, has urged the management of the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS) of the university to include youth rehabilitation on suicide in its proposed ‘Mediation Room’.

Bello spoke on Wednesday during a meeting with CPSS delegation led by the Director, Prof. Noah Yusuf.

He explained that Mediation Room was an initiative that allowed people who were willing to settle disputes out of court to visit for mediation at no cost.

Bello lamented the growing number of feeble minded youths who saw suicide as an alternative to solving their problems in life, adding that the Mediation Room could be used to reach out to them.

He observed that it was not only when there was physical exchange that mediation was needed.

Bello said rather, there was need to change the mindset of the youth, who felt that the moment they had challenges, the next thing was to give up.

He said there were stories of third class graduates who were now scholars in the academia.

Bello implored the CPSS team to also extend the Mediation Room to the members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for them to understand the importance of peaceful resolution to their agitations.

He assured management of the Centre that the administration of the Postgraduate School under him would strengthen the already established cordial relationship and cooperation between it and the CPSS.

Earlier, the Director of CPSS, Yusuf, said that the visit was to congratulate the new Dean on his election and to acquaint him with the existing relationship between the Postgraduate School and the Centre.

Noah said that the Centre had secured N3 million for its proposed Mediation Room, adding that the main objective of the programme was to make it a practical experience for postgraduate students.

“The Mediation Room would also serve as a resolution centre for the University community and communities in Kwara State,” he said. (NAN)
