South African unions oppose split of power firm

African Trade Union Federation (COSATU) says it is opposed to a proposal to split up Eskom, the country’s power firm, into three different entities.

COSATU Deputy General Secretary Solly Phetoe stated the union’s position on Tuesday at a news conference in Johannesburg.

Phetoe said that the split would not solve the struggling utility’s governance and debt problems.

“We do not support un-bundling as the only option to turn around Eskom,” Phetoe said.

Phetoe said the proposal to split Eskom into three separate firms was made only by a task team appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa at a meeting with members of the ruling African National Congress.
