Seeing Double

The next time you have a classic outing with the ankara, as the ”Aso Ebi”, do not feel confused about the style to go for. Needless to tell you that the ankara fabric is just here to stay, not for any other thing but for its adaptability to other prints. So, it really can’t be a bore.

Before you bother to ask what’s new, the idea this week is that you try to mix the ankara fabric with other fabrics, including another pattern of ankara in one look and let’s see what you look like. Did I hear you say yuck? Oh, come on! It’s no longer fashionable to go in just one print or go the stereotype way of mixing it with just plain colours. This is why we say this style is for the bold.

To play safe, however,  bellow are some guidelines to follow:

1. Stick with two colours for starters

If you are new in this game, it’s best you start with ankara prints of two colours  until you’re used to it. And if it is another fabric, whether chiffon, cotton or any type, make sure the colours are matching; at least, two matching colours must be visible.

2. Keep a colour in mind

Mixing different fabrics requires that you take into consideration what colours are combined. You will get this right by picking one predominant colour in both to pass your message across. The  prints or design may be different but ensure a rhyming colour.

3. Different patterns

Your taste will speak volume if you ensure the patterns on each fabric are different. For instance, if you combine a large patterned fabric with or over a small patterned one and vice-versa, you will definitely stand out beautifully.

4. Minimise accessories

With the emphasis that comes with patterns in this type of mix-match, wearing a bold and coloruful statement accessory might be unnecessary. Try a  neutral and simple type  instead.
