Schoolchildren in the Netherlands march against climate change

Several thousand schoolchildren took part in a protest march against climate change in the Netherlands, police said on Thursday.

The children travelled by bus and train to The Hague, the seat of the Dutch government, from across the Netherlands to demand action against climate change.

Police said around 5,000 children took part in the march, though organisers said the number was significantly higher.

There have been several demonstrations against climate change by schoolchildren around the world in recent weeks.

In a letter published in Dutch media on Thursday, 350 scientists expressed their support for the children and said current measures against climate change were insufficient.

“We cannot afford to wait any longer to take the necessary measures,’’ they said.

In January, a Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency report said the country was falling short of targets for its carbon dioxide production and renewable energy use. (NAN)
