Sanwo-Olu renames Onikan Stadium after Mobolaji Johnson

…As Tinubu, others eulogise late ex-Lagos MILAD

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State , on Tuesday, renamed the Onikan Stadium after late first governor of Lagos State, Brig.-Gen. Mobolaji Johnson.

Other dignatries that paid their respect to the late former governor includes the National Leader of All Progressive Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and aformer governors of the state for his honesty and sincerity while in office.

At the Day of Honour event to celebrate the life of the late governor held at Onikan Stadium, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the newly-rebuilt stadium would now be known as Mobolaji Olufunsho Stadium Arena, adding the late Mobolaji Johnson stood out as a special person for running a corrupt free administration while serving as governor.

“We gathered here to celebrate the life of a great patron and accomplished administrator. He stood out as a special person for his charismatic personality. Despite his imposing frame, he was a gentle as a dove.

“He was never authoritarian , he was compassionate and never ruled with iron hand. This occasion is an opportunity to thank this great Lagosian.

“He was a symbol of decency, humility and constant source of support to successive governments in Lagos. He discharged his mandate equitably.

“His record of service remain intact and unblemished. He would be.missed by all. This arena will now be called Mobolaji Olufunsho Johnson Arena,” he said.

On his part, Asiwaju Tinubu  said the late Johnson lived an incorruptible lifestyle.

Accordoing to Tinubu, “We pay tribute to a man of integrity. He was a servant leader, a man of incorruptible character.

“He never used the corridor of power to acquire personal wealth. He did not compromise ethics of military professionalism, he was a man of courage and peace.

“He laid a durable foundation for Lagos State, he served the people. He never waiver. He assembled the best of the cabinet both young and old.

“He showcased a strong determination, courage and consistency. He ran a clean and honest administration, he supported all of us,” Tinubu eulogised.

Former military governor of Lagos, Ndubuisi Kanu described late Mobolaji Johnson  as a ‘first class administrator’ who maintained dignity of himself and that of the people.”

Brig.-Gen. Olagunsoye Oyinlola (rtd), who is also a former military governor of Lagos State, said he always sought the advice of late Johnson while serving as the governor in the state.

On his part, Brig.-Gen. Raji Rasaki also praised late Mobolaji Johnson for his simplicity.

In the words of Gen. Rasaki (rtd), “He was a soldier of all soldiers. He was very nice to all of us. We learnt his simplicity. When he was governor, he did not discriminate against anyone. He lived a very successful life. He was a gentleman,” he said.
