Russia’s Putin to visit Finland for talks with Niinisto

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on on Wednesday that he is set to visit neighboring Finland on August  21 for talks with his counterpart Sauli Niinisto, the Finnish president’s office.

According to a statement, the talks between the two leaders in the capital Helsinki are expected to focus on current international and bilateral issues.

Putin last visited Finland a year ago, their most recent meeting was in April in St Petersburg in connection with the Arctic Forum.

However, after the talks at the president’s palace, Niinisto was to host a dinner at the Suomenlinna Fortress that guards the entrance to Helsinki harbour. The UN designated it as a world heritage site in 1991.

Finland, like its neighbour Sweden, has since in 1994, cooperated with NATO in the Partnership for Peace programme and participated in NATO-led operations in Afghanistan although neither country is a member of the Western military alliance.

Meanwhile,Finland currently holds the rotating presidency of the Europea. (NAN)
