Retreat: Nigerian, Ghanaian women journalists exchange ideas on way forward for journalism

Mrs. Ifeyinwa Omowole, National President of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), says mentorship of up-coming journalists is key to ensuring proper practice of the profession

Speaking during an interactive session with members of Ghana Association of Women in Media in Accra on Sunday, she said it was for this reason that NAWOJ introduced mentorship programme for graduates of Mass Communication in Nigeria to keep them abreast with new techniques in reportage.

According to her, the programme will prepare the mind-set of young female journalists to develop interest in all the various beats in newsrooms.

She explained that passion for the profession was necessary for practitioners to live up to their responsibilities.

In her remarks, President of Ghana Association of Women in Media, Mrs Mavis Kitcher, called on women journalists to strive towards updating themselves on modern trends in journalism. as well as Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

She said that knowledge of ICT was inevitable,as such the need for capacity building could not be over emphasized.

“Women journalists should be ICT compliant and also mentor our young female journalists,” she said.

In his remarks ,President of Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr Affail Monney, commended NAWOJ for the visit, saying it had brought female journalists from the two countries together.

He said the GJA would also plan a similar visit to Nigeria to exchange ideas on how to move the profession forward.
