Re-election: I wish Buhari, Nigeria best of luck — Babatope

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Chief Ebenezer Babatope, on Wednesday said he wished President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigeria the best of luck over the results of the February 23, presidential election.

Babatope, a former Minister of Transport, made the statement in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos State.

He was reacting to Wednesday’s announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declaring president Buhari as winner of the poll.

INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, while making the announcement in Abuja said president Buhari polled 15,191,847 votes to defeat his main challenger, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 11,255.978 votes.

Reacting, Babatope said he had nothing much to say than to wish president Buhari and the country the best of luck.

The PDP chieftain said his statement did not mean he was congratulating the president over the result.

“All I can say and I will say it in very brief words is that I wish president Buhari and Nigeria the best of luck.

“I am a member of the PDP and I am telling you that I wish president Buhari and Nigeria the best of luck.

“I am not congratulating him. I can never because they have set in motion something which is a big threat to democracy.

“I am a student of history and I know what I am talking about. That is why I can only wish president Buhari and Nigeria the best of luck”, he said.

He declined comment on the decision of Atiku to challenge president Buhari’s re-election in court. (NAN)
