Railway workers suspend strike

The Nigerian Railway Corporation has stated that workers have suspended their strike, adding that rail services between Abuja- Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan will resume on Saturday.

This was disclosed by the Managing Director of Nigerian Railways Corporation (NRC), Mr Fidet Okhiria, in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The railway workers embarked on a strike on Thursday over staff welfare issues that would have stopped planned rail services in Nigeria over the weekend.

He also added that the NRC management and the union had directed workers to resume work with immediate effect in a joint communique suspending the strike on Friday night.

The Nigerian Xpress reported earlier that the Federal Government had urged striking railways workers to return to their duty posts and assured them that their reasons for the strike action were being looked into.

Mr Okhiria stated that the union workers had the right to demand better welfare, stating that the NRC expected a positive response from National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission.
