Police foil plans to kidnap oil merchant, request N60m ransom

Three suspects who had reportedly attempted to kidnap an oil and gas merchant in Lagos, Solomon Otungo, and requested from him a ransom of N60 million, have been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command. 

The suspects, whose names were given as Agu Izuchukwu, Tunde Olaewo and Sunday Nwankwo, were said to be newly-employed staff of a company owned by Otungo at Bucknor area of Ejigbo.

Parading the suspects at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, in Ikeja, Commissioner of Police, CP Zubairu Muazu,  said the suspects were arrested based on credible intelligence.

He said police team had stormed a hideout where the suspects were holding nocturnal meetings on how they would kidnap and keep their employer incommunicado until a ransom of N60 million was paid.

“ Based on the information, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ejigbo Police Station, CSP Okuwobi Olabisi, swiftly mobilised Police detectives and stormed the venue of the meeting where Izuchukwu,19 years, and Olaewo 21 years were promptly rounded up and brought to the station.

“The confessional statements of the suspects, led to the arrest of Nwankwo  in Isolo area of Lagos State.The suspects in unison, have confessed to the crime. They added that if their plan had pulled through, they would have demanded a N60 million Naira ransom from the business man,” the CP disclosed.

Muazu stated that the Suspects will be charged to court at the conclusion of investigation.
