Police ASP, Inspector arrested for killing 17-year-old girl, injuring another

Two policemen, Theophilus Otobo, an Asisstant Superintendent of Police and Oguntoba Olamigoke, an Inspector of Police, have been arrested for shooting dead a 17-year-old girl, Ezekwe Tina, in Lagos.

The policemen attached to the Bariga Police Division, had allegedly fired a shot from their pin down point along Berger by Third Mainland Bridge, for a reason yet to be ascertained, on May 26.

The bullet injured a 35-year-old man, Musa Yakubu on the spot, and strayed to hit Tina on the left upper side of her lap, at Berger Yanaworu.

The deceased it was learnt, was rushed to a hospital by a team of Policemen led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), but died two days later, while Yakubu is said to be stable.

While the policemen have been subjected to internal disciplinary proceeding, the Lagos State Police Command said they will be arraigned in court of law if found culpable for the act.

The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Elkana Bala in a statement on Friday, said that the command was in touch with both the family of the deceased, and that of the victim.

Bala in the statement said: “ The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered an in depth investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Two Police Officers suspected to have carried out the shooting were arrested and subjected to internal disciplinary proceedings. If found culpable, they will be arraigned in Court.

“ The Police is in contact with the families of the victims from the day of the incident. The Command deeply sympathised with the family and friends of the deceased person. The Commissioner of Police calls for calm and assures the family that the perpetrators of this dastardly act will face the full weight of the law.

“ He reiterated his stance on zero tolerance for impunity. Members of the public will be updated on the outcome of the investigation. ”
