Police arrest 33 over cult clash in Lagos

Following the cult clash in Lagos, which resulted in the death of two persons, on Wednesday, the Police in the state have confirmed the arrest of 33 suspects.

Recall that rival cult groups from Alakara, Mushin and Onipanu, had engaged in a bloody fracas where many were also injured.

The suspects who were arrested by the Onipanu Police Division were said to be members of the warring cult groups.

Although normalcy had since returned to the area, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Elkana Bala, said the command had drafted policemen to the area to ensure that all the hoodlums involved the clash were arrested.

Speaking on the arrest, Bala said, “ The cultists who were armed with dangerous weapons had engaged themselves in a fierce supremacy fight at Fadeyi, Onipanu, along Ikorodu road.

“During the scuffle, Tobi Kuti, suspected to be one of the hoodlums and Samuel Geofrey of DTD Services, Apapa, were killed by the hoodlums. Patrol teams and operatives of tactical units were promptly deployed to the scene.

“The teams swiftly contained the situation and restored normalcy to the area. 33 suspects were arrested in connection with the incident.”

The PPRO also mentioned that two locally made short guns, ten live cartridges, dangerous weapons such as cutlasses, knives, were recovered from the arrested persons.

On steps the command has taken to arrest the other suspects, Bala said,  “ the Command has deployed more resources to the affected areas for manhunt of other fleeing members of the gangs.”

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Zubairu Muazu, who also spoke on the development, called on parents to be vigilant and monitor the activities of their children.

Muazu  said, “ Parents should monitor the activities of their children especially those who engage themselves in cult activities and gangsterism, as the Command is duty bound to deal decisively with criminal elements in line with the law and protect the lives of the good people of Lagos State.”

He further stated that investigation was ongoing.
