Police arraign 3 for alleged child trafficking

The police in Lagos State, on Thursday, charged three accused persons, Anthony Anyanwu, 23, and Harrison Anaele, 60, both males, and Itoro Umanah, 20, a female to an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court.

The arraignment followed the accusation that the trio allegedly engaged in child trafficking.

The three accused persons, whose addresses were not known, allegedly conspired to sell a five month old child, David Anyanwu.

According to the police, the accused are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, felony and to sell a child.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. John Eberedem, told the court that the accused committed the offences on December 31, 2018 at No 9, Alison close off, Aduragbemi, Agric in Ikorodu, at about 6:10 p.m.

Eberedem said the offence contravened Sections 411, 276(a) and 276(b), of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015, (Revised).

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The chief magistrate, Mrs F.A. Azeez, granted the accused bail in the sum of one million naira, each with two sureties in like sum.

The chief magistrate said that the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of three years tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until February 28 for mention. (NAN)
