Oyo NUJ seeks probe of fire disasters

The Oyo State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has commiserated with victims of the recent fire disasters across the state and called for the investigation of the incidents.

A statement issued in Ibadan by the union’s Secretary, Mr. Sola Oladapo, also called on the state government to evolve more proactive measures to forestall future occurrences.

It would be recalled that the state had in the last few days witnessed repeated fire incidents across the state, claiming lives and properties worth millions of naira.

The incidents had occurred at Molete, Iyaganku and Oyo town.

The union’s statement said in part: “In the last few days, we have witnessed three fire outbreaks in Ibadan and Oyo respectively. We received with rude shock that of Eyin Grammar around Molete which claimed the lives of three kids.

“Few days after, another one was at a furniture stall around Iyaganku GRA in Ibadan and later Akesan Market in Oyo. This is a very sad development that must be critically looked into.

“All stakeholders including government must come together to collectively evolve measures toward forestalling future occurrences.

“We commiserate with victims and pray that God replenish them. We also pray that God grant the families of the deceased fortitude to bear the irreparable losses.”

The union further called for the provision of adequate fire fighting equipment in every local government in the state to ensure prompt response to such outbreaks in future.

“Like hospitals, schools and police stations, there is need for all local governments to have at least a functional fire fighting station,” it said.

It also called on residents of the state to adhere strictly to safety rules and regulations when using fire as well as electrical appliances. (NAN)
