Lagelu Progressives United, an Oyo State-based pressure group has called on the state governor, Governor Seyi Makinde and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State to stand by the motto of the party which is justice, unity and progress, so as to nurture and sustain an enduring democratic culture in Oyo State.

The group in a statement released in Ibadan at the weekend and signed by its Secretary, Dr. Olusegin Adelakun, commended Governor Seyi Makinde over his position as regards the Southern Governors’ resolution that the Southern States of Nigeria must produce the next President of the country as espoused by the governor at the recent Southwest Stakeholders meeting he hosted in Ibadan.

The group added that Governor Seyi Makinde’s position on the issue of power shift from the north to the south shows that a governor is a man of honour and integrity who will always stand by principles of equity and justice and uphold agreements in the interest of the socio-political and economic progress of our dear state and the country at large.

It thanked the governor for throwing his weight behind the conduct of a primary election for all the aspirants in the Akinyele/Lagelu Federal Constituency, adding that the action of the governor has demonstrated he is a committed democrat who believes that power indeed belongs to the people.

The group appealed to the governor to keep his words to elders and aspirants which he pledged on 5th April 2022 at Government House when he met leaders and aspirants that he would create an enabling environment for a free, fair and credible primary election devoid of violence.

It applauded the governor for his warning that he would deal firmly with anyone who might wish to foment trouble or engage in thuggery during the primary.

The Lagelu group said the time had come when political actors in the constituency, especially those from Lagelu Local Government Area, must take a new course that is non-violent and progressive in the best interest of the development of the LGA.

It pointed out that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has a fundamental role to play under the Electoral Act, and called on the State Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC to ensure that his officials perform their monitoring duty on 20th May 2022 lawfully so that the result shall reflect the true wishes of the delegates.
