Wife of a former Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, Beatrice, who is facing trial for allegedly trafficking a young Nigerian to the UK for the purpose of harvesting his kidney, alongside her husband, has been granted bail by a United Kingdom, court.

Recall that the couple had been accused of plotting to transplant the organs of the trafficked 21-year-old David Ukpo, to their daughter, Sonia, who is down with kidney failure.

Ekweremadu’s wife was granted bail at the Old Bailey court by the Common Serjeant of London, Judge Richard Marks, under stringent conditions.

However, Sen. Ekweremadu, was not as lucky as the court denied him bail.

“The position is that I have granted bail to Beatrice subject to some fairly stringent conditions, but I have refused bail to Ike,” the judge ruled.

Ike Ekweremadu and his wife ran into trouble when the young man that was to donate one of his kidneys for a transplant to their ailing daughter raised the alarm that he was trafficked to the UK. Though he claimed to be a 15-year-old minor, it was later established that he is actually 21 years old.
